Leading the way in the wholefoods market, we chat to Suma co-operative member Sophie Ziegler-Jones to find out how the co-op is going from strength to strength

Hi Sophie, tell us a little bit about Suma

We’re a vegetarian wholefoods wholesaler and we also sell directly to customers via our online shop. I think most people will know us for our Suma food, Ecoleaf household and ALTER/NATIVE bodycare ranges. We were set-up as a worker co-op where everyone is paid the same wage and has an equal say in how we’re run.

How did Suma come about?

It started in Leeds, in the 1970s, when our founder, Reg, spotted a gap for bulk vegetarian provisions. Back then, people thought wholefoods were just for hippies! He set up a collective and would deliver after hours from the back of his van – I guess you could call it an early zero-waste store! Since then, we haven’t looked back.

Ingenious! How have things changed since then?

Well, the wholefoods market has gone from strength to strength; vegetarianism has become mainstream, closely followed by veganism. Sustainability and environmental impact – which we’ve championed from the off – are now the urgent issues of the day. Suma is still run on the same principles as day one: cruelty-free, sustainable, ethical, fair trade, organic and co-operative.

You must have racked up some serious eco-credentials over the years

Where to start? We’re certified by the Soil Association, the Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society. We’ve been cruelty-free since day one and all our Ecoleaf and ALTER/NATIVE products are approved under the Leaping Bunny programme. We’re Fair Tax certified and proud members of Business Declares, too, a network of businesses acknowledging the climate emergency.

We can tell that you’re passionate about the industry

It’s hard not to get excited. We regularly win awards – in fact last year, we were chuffed to make it to the top of Ethical Consumer’s Best Ethical Supermarket listing, which is no mean feat given their stringent criteria. I think our new and ambitious sustainability strategy played a big part in this.

Oh yes?

Our aim is to be Net Zero by 2030. We already do a lot to support the environment, like reducing waste and carbon emissions, supporting local suppliers and organic agriculture, while promoting fair trade, co-ops and B-Corps. We plant trees every year to help prevent flooding in our local area and are continuing the switch to electric and bio-gas fuel vehicles powered by food waste. We’re also working towards being a ‘zero waste to landfill’ business and are already really close to that.

Thanks. It’s going to be hard work, but we know it’s the right thing to do and that’s what we’re about – we’re just a bunch of ordinary people trying to do the right thing.Suma is clearly setting the bar for the competition. We’ve always been a trailblazer for vegetarian, vegan, and sustainably-sourced wholefoods and aim to support innovative, independent suppliers who aren’t stocked by the big supermarkets. Morning Rowan, tell us a little about Timber

Timber Festival began back in 2018 with a partnership between Wild Rumpus CIC (the non-profit arts organisation who produce the festival) and The National Forest Company. The aim was to connect people with the local landscape, once scarred by years of open cast mining, but now a thriving newly planted forest! Timber is a weekend-long festival, which encourages those who visit to rethink their relationship with nature, and to unplug and recharge under the trees. This year’s festival will be so special, we’re already looking forward to July!

We see that your ‘office’ isn’t your normal 9–5 set-up

Ha, yes, the Wild Rumpus team work from a beautiful woodland workspace where our connection with nature is quite literally at our fingertips, influencing every planning meeting and programme decision. As an organisation, we’ve grown and developed in surprising and interesting directions, with each team member shaping the festival in their own unique way, from the recycling stations to the Saturday headliner. The event is curated by people who care deeply about each element, and that shines through.

Wow, your passion really shines through

Oh, I hope so. One of the things we’re most proud of is ensuring we work in a sustainable way, we’re passionate about positively influencing our supply chains to offer greener options themselves. Everything that comes onto the festival site first has to get past Aileen Ging, our Sustainability Lead, from the power we use, to waste management and toilets. And it doesn’t stop once we wave off our final festival goers. In fact, last year’s solid waste from the composting loos travelled just 14 miles and is almost ready to be used to nourish local soil!

After an eventful few years, how has Timber evolved?

Timber had a joyous origin, and we really celebrated trees and nature during the first two years. However, post-covid, the community that comes together at the event feels so much more connected, more urgent and more caring. I really believe that the festival goes beyond celebrating the National Forest and our connection to nature – it explores how we interact with the world and each other. It really is a place where, through music, art, circus, workshops and wonder, we can start to imagine a hopeful new world.

That’s powerful – what sort of impact do you think the event has on its festival goers?

Timber is all about hope. Looking joyfully to nature, trees and forests while exploring what a regenerative future might look like. This, for us, is the source of all passion, from seeing families enjoy time together in the outdoors to facilitating breathtaking outdoor theatre performance, and encouraging festival goers to dance, craft, eat and experience the restorative power of nature.

Tell us a fun fact about the festival

It takes place on an old coal mine! Walking the Feanedock site is testament to the power of nature and how it can regenerate and grow in the most unexpected of places. Over the past 30 years, more than eight and a half million trees have been planted throughout the 200 square miles of the National Forest – now, if that’s not a story worth sharing, we’re not sure what is!

And what puts the biggest smile on your face after all the hard work over a year?

We work hard to create a weekend that welcomes, inspires and enthralls those who call Timber their festival home, so the greatest thrill comes from seeing hundreds of people leave the festival feeling energised and restored, and ready to take on the world!

Cork mats

Craft stencils (ours are from stencilup.co.uk)

Sponge roller or stencil brush

Paint tray or kitchen towel

1 Position the stencil on your cork mat. Stencil Up stencils conveniently come with an adhesive backing to keep them in place and prevent the paint from bleeding.

2 Apply a small amount of the Jubilee paint to the roller brush, ensuring an even distribution. Remove any excess paint by rolling it over a piece of kitchen towel.

3 Roll the paint onto the stencil with gentle pressure, gradually building up the colour. When you’re ready, carefully peel away the stencil to reveal your design. To continue the patten, use the stencil registration marks for precise positioning.

4 Add a touch of gold! Use the handle end of the paint brush to add delicate dots, or the mop brush for creating some subtle sparkling edges and other golden enhancements.

Hi Alice, tell us a bit about Yawn

Well, I started the company back in 2014. I was working as a management consultant, not seeing nearly enough of my kids and I was tired – so it’s ironic that pyjamas were the answer. I wanted to create nightwear that helped women to switch off, sleep and rest; pyjamas that felt like a hug and could reassure women that it’s okay to slow down.

They sound like our kind of pyjamas!

Yes, luckily, I had a couple of like-minded friends – Phil and Roly – who own a design and branding agency, and knew what I was trying to achieve. Together, Yawn was born.

You’re literally in the ‘dream’ business

In many ways, although we could never have imagined the challenges of the past eight years, what with Brexit and Covid. It’s been a rollercoaster, but one that I am very happy to still be riding! I credit our wonderful customers and suppliers with helping us through the tough times.

You have wonderful customers then?

Oh my goodness, yes! We’ve a band of very loyal customers. They let us know their thoughts every time we bring out a new print, which is about four times a year. They also inform our new product launches and volunteer for photoshoots. We’re so proud of this amazing community – their enthusiasm and support keeps us going.

We’ve heard your prints are hand painted

Yes, they’re hand-drawn or painted and, while they’re beautiful, the real fun is in the detail – somewhere on the fabric there will be a quirky image, such as a whale in stormy seas, a forest fox, a sole trainer and even a skinny dipper! We source the fabric using GOTS-certified organic cotton and you never know where the hidden detail will be. Other details that we’re proud of are French seams, sustainable corozo buttons, reinforced buttonholes and pockets! Who doesn’t love a pocket, right?

You’re clearly incredibly proud of Yawn

We’ve won awards and have had some incredible press, however, what always makes me smile is our consistently high Feefo rating (4.9*) and our Feefo Platinum awards. We always try and deliver the personal touch and treat our customers like we’d like to be treated. My mum reads our reviews every week and tells me how happy they make her feel. To me, that says it all.

It really has, being responsible in our approach to product design and sourcing has been hugely important right from the outset. Our factories were selected based on their ethical credentials, while the paper packaging is FSC-certified, we use recyclable cardboard shippers and we even opt for sea freight rather than air. We completely believe in ‘slow fashion’ in every sense – it’s how we sleep soundly at night… that, and wearing super comfy jammies.

Kettle’s on. Tell us, how did Cupsmith come about?

It started 10 years ago, when I was maternity leave. We’d moved from London to the countryside and I missed my favourite coffee shop and a proper cup of coffee. There was nothing that hit the mark nearby, so in desperation, me and my husband George learnt to roast our own! What followed was months of learning from mistakes and making tweaks until we got it right. That’s when we realised there was a gap for an easy-to-drink, brilliant-tasting coffee at home without all the baffling jargon.

You clearly love your coffee! Have things changed much over the past decade?

Oh yes, the hot drinks market has absolutely exploded. Fortunately, we’ve managed to keep pace – so much so, that we recently had to move to a larger factory as we’d outgrown our last one. We now have an extensive range of speciality coffees, teas and hot chocolates and we’re stocked in high-end retailers, such as Waitrose, Ocado and Selfridges.

What keeps you so passionate about the industry?

We’re just so proud of our brand. We will never compromise on taste as we believe that if we didn’t enjoy our drinks, why would we sell them. We’re particularly proud of the fact that we still make it all ourselves in small batches, overseeing everything from buying ingredients to roasting to packing and shipping.

And what is it that you’re most proud of?

I think it’s that we’re able to give people that ‘first sip bliss’ – you know, the moment when you pause, relax and go “ahhhhh” as that first sip touches your lips.

We know how busy people are and how they’re often bogged down by never-ending to-do lists, but we’re committed to slowing things down a little and giving our customers the opportunity to enjoy a few minutes to themselves with a truly exceptional cup of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. We’re also pretty chuffed with our eco credentials.

Oh yes?

Totally, we’re super passionate about our ethical and sustainability status. We only use speciality coffee beans to ensure that the supply chain remains transparent and that farmers are paid more than Fairtrade for their crops than regular coffee. We also only use single-origin Colombian chocolate, which is 100% slave-free and our teas are made with organic ingredients in a bid to protect biodiversity. All of our products are packaged in recyclable materials, while our hot chocolates and teas are 100% plastic-free, too.

So what’s next for Cupsmith?

We’ve been working on a new look and feel for the brand, which we’re really excited to share with our customers, so keep your eyes peeled. And, of course, we want to continue helping people to thoroughly enjoy that ‘first sip bliss’.

This sounds heavenly, Emma – can you share what your ideal ‘first sip bliss’ moment would be?

That’s easy, it would involve a cup of our Breakfast Coffee. I’m a morning lark rather than a night owl, so I love sitting at the kitchen table before anyone else in the house has stirred, listening to the countryside coming to life outside. Makes 24 cookies

175g Doves Farm organic oat flour

1 tsp Doves Farm bicarbonate of soda

75g butter, cubed, plus extra for greasing

100g caster sugar

1 egg

150g dark chocolate chips

1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Meanwhile, grease two oven trays with butter or line with baking paper.

2 Add the oat flour and bicarbonate of soda to a bowl, stir to combine, then sieve into a separate bowl.

3 Chop the butter into a mixing bowl, add the sugar and beat until well incorporated.

4 Break the egg into the bowl and beat until combined.

5 Tip the flour blend into the bowl and mix well.

6 Add the chocolate chips and stir everything together.

7 Divide the mix into 24. Roll each portion into balls and place on the baking trays .

8 Flatten each cookie gently with the back of a fork.

9 Bake for 10-12 mins. Once cooled, the cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
