We catch up with Nuno Tavares, founder of Tours For You, to find out how kindness is key when it comes to tailored travel in Portugal and Spain

Hi, Nuno, tell us a little about yourself

Olá! I run Tours For You, a Portuguese-based travel company, which specialises in creating bespoke travel, events and experiences throughout Portugal and Spain.

That sounds exciting, how did this come about?

I started my career as a Telecoms Engineer, however, my true passion lay in travel. I loved exploring off-the-beaten-track, away from crowds, and instead of big-brand chains, I preferred boutique hotels with local charm. So, in 2003, I set up Tours For You to share these ideas with discerning travellers who wanted to experience Portugal in the same way. The business proved so successful that a couple of years later we expanded to include Spain. We also offer tailored incentive and event packages throughout Portugal for international corporate clients.

Wow, the company has really taken off!

Yes, 23 years feels like a lifetime. Luckily, we’ve had far more successes than failures – although every single step has taught us something along the way and, more importantly, they’ve helped us to build our respected reputation. Today, we’re an enthusiastic and passionate team of 35 – which still makes us a small enterprise, but not too small because we’re a niche operator.

What sort of experiences do you offer?

We don’t have ready-made packages or a list of options – not because we have too little to offer, but because we have too much! Our services start with a conversation, and we can craft something specifically shaped to the client’s needs. Whether it’s hosting a leadership retreat in Lisbon, organising a culinary team-building in Alentejo, or simply planning a break to discover the hidden gems that give Portugal and Spain their character, Tours For You can make it happen.

What a great story, you must have had many highlights over the years

Indeed, just four years after we started, Tours For You was invited to become part of Virtuoso, a prestigious travel consortium, and several other travel brands have since followed suit. We also get regular coverage in well-known travel magazines, which keep us in the public eye. Tours For You has also been nominated for Best Destination Management Company/Tour Operator many times, and I think this is a direct result of our creative, highly reliable and kind approach towards our clients. However, the greatest reward is always great feedback from happy clients.

Your motto is ‘kindness-made’, tell us more…

Kindness is my ‘simple thing’. I believe it should be at the core of everything we do – especially in the changing world that we find ourselves in. In fact, it’s my aim to always have it at the forefront of our minds and to inspire everyone around us: our staff, our travellers, our partners, our competitors and, of course, ourselves.

It’s clear Tours For You is a passion project. What else interests you?

I’ve also been fascinated by ecology and film making since I was a boy. Five years ago, I combined them both when I directed a documentary called The Soul of a Cyclist. I wanted it to convey an ecological message about how the simple things really are the best things in life. It was exhibited at film festivals around the world, from the UK to Japan, and won some great accolades. 

That sounds fantastic. What else is on the horizon?

I want to learn more about permaculture and develop my ecological interests further. However, my focus is firmly on Tours For You and embracing our clients’ needs with the good values, practices and reliability that define us. When it comes to looking for new trends and experiences to offer our travellers, having a ‘startup mentality’ with the maturity and experience of a 23 year old company will hopefully stand us in good stead.

Food for thought

One of the beauties of a caravan or motorhome getaway is that wherever you pitch up, you’ll always have a kitchenette at your disposal, so warm meals or just that essential cuppa are always easy to rustle up. However, facilities are often compact, so clever gadgets can make all the difference to your holiday. When it comes to cooking, storage is at a premium, so having one pan that can do the job of many can be handy. Try a multi-section frying pan, which is particularly ideal for nailing a full fry up all in one pan – and better still, it means less washing up! Alternatively, there are also plenty of collapsible or stackable cookware options, too, which allow you to flatten pans and strainers down, or stack several utensils inside each other, meaning you can make the most of your limited storage space. Another essential for a well-organised kitchen includes non-slip drawer liners, which not only prevent your crockery from moving around during transit, they also add extra cushioning to breakables. A sturdy cool box will not only give you extra chilled storage if your fridge is on the small side, but it also means that once you find your dream destination, you can head out for the day and still keep a picnic as fresh as the moment you made it. Waking up to a good cup of coffee is another key element of holiday happiness – and sometimes a spoonful of instant granules just won’t do, so consider a travel French Press mug that allows you to brew a freshly ground cup of coffee, so you’ll be full of beans and ready for your day.

Work it

At the end of the day, a holiday is all about relaxing and enjoying yourself, so setting up your pitch for an evening of fun, will be what those memories are all about. A rechargeable lantern will ensure you can enjoy the great outdoors long after the sun dips. There are plenty of lanterns available that offer added extras, such as inbuilt speakers or a phone charger. Meanwhile, solar-powered fairy lights will pretty your pitch up and will create ambience, ideal for an evening of chatting over a glass of wine, or perhaps competing in a family board games championship. However, if you’re exhausted after a day spent exploring, then how about sitting back and enjoying a film? There are a multitude of portable projectors on the market, many of which are compatible with a smartphone. Simply hang a flat sheet between two trees and create your own outdoor cinema. Why not enjoy the film in extra comfort? Look for a collapsible camping chair with plenty of padding and ideally a holder for your drink and popcorn. Then, sit back and enjoy the film, and your holidays.

Named Scottish town of year for 2024, the bustling harbour has award-winning seafood eateries, a whisky distillery that was founded in 1794 and sunsets that’ll stick in the memory long after the sun has disappeared. Tours discover the volcanic landscape and wildlife of the Isle of Mull. Whether it’s snorkeling into the cavern of Fingal’s Cave and discovering the basalt columns which tower above you, floating around at the spectacular Hebrides lagoon, or witnessing the Corryvreckan whirlpool – the third largest in the world, there’s something to ignite all levels of adventure.

Moving on to the Isle of Coll – a jewel of the Inner Hebrides – which sits bang in middle of the basking shark’s only marine-protected area worldwide. Multi-day tours enable you to snorkel around the abundant kelp forests, to hopefully catch sight of grey seals and puffins, and to potentially spot cetaceans. You may also be lucky enough to experience the basking shark, the second largest shark in the ocean, in this Hebridean hotspot. So, do you dare to dive in for the adventure of a lifetime?

Welcome Gudrun, we hear you’re in celebratory mood…

Absolutely! We’re celebrating fifty amazing years of creativity! That’s half a century of designing clothes for women who are not afraid to stand out from the crowd.

That’s incredible. How did it all start?

I’ve always been fascinated by clothes. While studying at Stockholm’s University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, there was a strong focus on textile handicrafts, which had a huge impression on me and shaped my creative style. My first job was in classic tailoring, however, it was the late Sixties and fashions were cutting-edge, innovative and fun – I was itching to get out there and make my own mark on the industry.

In 1974, I registered the Gudrun Sjödén trademark and created my first collection – active leisure wear in natural materials. It was such an adventure! Two years later, I opened my first store in Stockholm and things took off from there.

Your designs are so distinctive, what inspires you?

I’ve always been inspired by my heritage and my travels, whether it’s traditional Nordic folk art, the natural hues of the Swedish countryside or the richer, more jewel-like tones of places such as Morocco. I see my collections as a love letter to colour.

I love contrasts and surprising combinations – nothing run-of-the-mill – simply functional, multi-seasonal pieces that are flattering for all ages and all figures. However, what I love the most is meeting customers who are so enthusiastic, they’re a huge driving force for me.

You clearly love what you do. What drives you on?

Creating sustainable, eco-friendly clothes is our main focus and at the core of everything we do. At Gudrun Sjödén, we believe that the first step in minimising the adverse environmental impact on humanity is to reduce consumption, so all of our made-to-last designs are intended to be worn until threadbare. They’re heirloom pieces that should be passed on from generation to generation for a new lease of life with every new owner.

Inspiring stuff. What achievements really stand out for you?

We’ve been using organic cotton – my favourite fibre – for almost three decades now. We established a working relationship with a supplier in Northern Greece back in the 1990s and have been growing together ever since. In fact, as part of our commitment to better environmental practices, our supplier switched to new machines and the cotton farmer switched to new crops – a process that takes three years. We’re always looking to reduce our carbon footprint in everything that we do. Where possible, we recycle and have reduced the use of plastic and packaging, we use chlorine-free paper in all our printed materials, and we opt for sea or rail transportation rather than air or road for our garment shipments. Gudrun Sjödén has also supported our suppliers to establish water-saving digital printing techniques in order to produce our colour-rich classics, without ever compromising on quality.

What a breath of fresh air! So, back to your anniversary plans…

We recently held an interactive exhibition in Stockholm, charting our journey from the very beginning, and there will undoubtedly be lots more celebrations to come throughout the year, with plenty of colour. As with everything, my aim is to spread joy and to add fun and sparkle to everyday life.

Meanwhile, walkers can indulge their senses and enjoy the sun on their skin thanks to Carinthia’s 20 Slow Trails, each mapped out to offer relaxed lakeside paths that are no more than 10km in length.
