Tipple | Snowball with Vanilla or Gingerbread

Iona Bower December 7, 2024

Not for throwing, a snowball is the classic Christmas tipple, made extra festive with added gingerbread.

Serves 1

50ml Advocaat

10ml vanilla or gingerbread syrup

Squeeze of half a lime

Lemonade

Cocktail cherries, to garnish

1 In a cocktail shaker, add the Advocaat, syrup of choice and lime juice, shake to combine (if you don’t have a cocktail shaker, use a jam jar).

2 Pour into your glass, top up with lemonade and garnish with a cherry.

This is just one of the old school tipples and nibbles from our December issue feature, ‘Merry and Bites’. It also includes recipes for a Mulled Punch, Espresso Martini, Sidecar and a Cherry Brandy Fizz, alongside plenty of kitsch nibbles to get any party started. The recipes and photography are by Catherine Frawley.

Recipe | Chocolate Orange Hot Chocolate

Iona Bower December 10, 2022

A hot drink when it’s cold outside is one of life’s simple pleasures. Classic Christmassy confectionery adds a festive feel. (It’s not Terry’s; it’s ours)

Serves 2

100g orange chocolate, such as Terry’s Chocolate Orange
30g dark chocolate
1 orange
400ml whole milk
100ml single cream
Pinch of salt

1 Finely chop both types of chocolate using a sharp knife.

2 Using a peeler, remove a 10cm piece of peel from the orange.

3 Combine the chocolate, peel, milk, cream and salt in a pan and place over a low heat. While the chocolate slowly melts, stir well with a wooden spoon.

4 Once melted, pour into two mugs and serve immediately, or transfer to a flask for outdoor adventuring.

This warming festive drink is just one of the recipes and ideas from our feature, Christmas is Coming from the December issue. It also includes popcorn garlands, gingerbread snowflake biscuits, retro glitter decorations, Night Before Christmas cocktails and lots more things to make and do during advent.

Tipple | Swedish Glogg

Iona Bower December 1, 2020

The Swedes know a thing or two about keeping cosy in winter. Try this mulled wine, Swede style

A warming spiced drink that fills your home with the smells of Christmas is just what you need to kick off December. Pop on some carols, get your Christmas cards and pen out and welcome winter Scandi style

Makes 2 litres

2 oranges
350ml water
12 cloves
3 broken cinnamon sticks
4 star anise
10 bruised cardamom pods
A grating of fresh nutmeg (optional)
6 x ½cm-thick slices of fresh ginger
250g demerara sugar
4 tbsp dried cranberries (traditionally raisins)
2 x 750ml bottles of red wine
250ml brandy
4 tbsp flaked almonds, toasted

1 Squeeze the juice from one of the oranges into a large pot, then add the water, spices, ginger, sugar and cranberries. Gently simmer for 45 mins, then bring to the boil and let it bubble away for 2–3 mins, adding more water, if needed.
2 Thinly slice the remaining orange. Add it to the pot, along with the wine, brandy and toasted flaked almonds. Simmer for a further 15–20 mins, or until it’s fully warmed through. Serve while warm, ladled into heatproof glasses.

Recipe and styling by Rachel de Thample. Find this and more festive tipples, recipes and fun in our bumper December Miscellany, starting on page 65.

The Simple Things

Taking time to live well

We celebrate slowing down, enjoying what you have, making the most of where you live, enjoying the company of of friends and family, and feeding them well. We like to grow some of our own vegetables, visit local markets, rummage for vintage finds, and decorate our home with the plunder. We love being outdoors and enjoy the satisfaction that comes with a job well done.
