Deck the house out in Jubilee designs

It’s another Jubilee themed post, sorry. We can’t help it, we’re caught up in all the excitement! This time, its a round up of all the best products inspired by Her Majesty. Back to normal tomorrow, we promise.

First up, this pop art postage stamp bunting from Etsy's LottieDots1. Crafter Laura’s design has a cool, retro feel that will definitely stand out in the midst of all the red, white and blue.

Secondly, we’re buying into the age-old tradition of commemorative tea towels. Our favourites are Rocket St. George’s Singing in the Reign design (love a good pun), Lovely Jubilee from Hunted and Stuffed (there we go again) and this commemorative Corgi tea towel, also from Rocket St. George.

Finally, we’ll be rounding off our day with a lovely cup of tea, which we will be sipping from a delicate corgi teacup purchased from Emilou Makes on Etsy. With a raised little finger, of course.

Cool down with fruity ice cubes

We applaud anyone that can take the stress out of summertime entertaining. Bits of Taste’s idea for fruit ice cubes is a cool way to add a colourful twist to your drinks without having to faff around with fresh fruit and the like while your guests are waiting.

Make up a load in advance, then when people arrive, just pop 'em out of their moulds and into your glasses. Tah dah! Instant drama and a cool drink all in one. Cheers.

Bake up a storm with Jubilee cakes

If you’re living in the UK, you’ll know what’s happening this weekend. That’s right, Jubilee time! 60 years on the throne for Queen Liz! Street parties! Union flags everywhere! FOUR days off!

Phew. Exciting times. The proper British thing to do seems to be to mark the event with cake, and lots of it.

We’ll be baking up a storm, starting with a Jubilee sponge cake with blueberries and strawberries. Our favourite recipe comes from Edd Kimber, aka The Boy Who Bakes (is that name ringing any bells? Edd’s the man who had us all attempting macaroons back in series one of The Great British Bake Off).

To take along to our local street party, we’ll be trying out these Jubilee cupcake swirls à la The Magenta Cakes Blog. This looks like a super-easy way to achieve Union Jack style icing, but we’ll let you know how simple it really is once we’ve tried it.

Finally, we’ll be displaying our creations in style on their very own cupcake thrones. Or maybe not…

Button up a shirt cushion cover

Cushion covers are pretty easy to make, right? If you can make anything, you can make a cushion cover. Impressively, Ducks In a Row has managed to simplify the process even further with her upcycled shirt cushion cover DIY.

No fiddling around with zips or buttonholes, no painstakingly hand-stitching the final seam. Just sew around your cushion pad and unbutton! (Pop over to Ducks in a Row for proper instructions, we definitely missed a few steps there...).

These will look fab just as they are, but it's also really easy to make a kids' version. Blogger Chrissann has customised hers by tucking some surprises into the pockets - check out the cute love heart, retro pocket watch or for the more tech-savvy infant, a felt Blackberry!

Share some sticky marmalade picnic bread

Enthused by yesterday's Etsy cutlery wrap discovery, we’ve spent all morning hunting out recipes for lovely nibbly food to take on all the picnics we’ll be having.

This marmalade picnic bread recipe from apt 2b baking is quite possibly the ultimate in picnic food. It combines bread and filling in one handy loaf which can be pulled apart for sharing. No need to pack sticky jam jars, knives or cutting boards! How clever.

So clever, in fact, it renders our new knife and fork wraps totally obsolete. Looks like we’ll have to extend our picnic food hunt a little longer…

Keep your picnic tidy with cutlery wraps

The sun is shining, the grass is green and jackets are stowed securely back in our wardrobes. That’s right, picnic season is upon us.

To make al fresco eating much more practical, Etsy seller NStar Studios has come up with these genius picnic cutlery wraps. Roll it up and tie it in a bow to keep your cutlery neatly together rather than clattering around the bottom of your hamper and poking holes in your food bags.

Designer Nicky Ross gets extra points for using bamboo cutlery (reusable, and much more eco-friendly than plastic) and designing a pouch that can be put in the washing machine, ready for the inevitable (or is that just us?) lemonade / yoghurt / juice explosion.

Craft yourself a piglet tea towel

We’re always on the lookout for ways to put our stamp on our homes and we think we may just have found the perfect idea.

This piglet tea towel tutorial from Elsie Marley is a great way of adding individuality without compromising on functionality – after all, it’s no good if it doesn’t dry the dishes and can’t be thrown in the washing machine!

Elsie has included a simple how-to and we're pleased to find that it requires hardly any effort (and minimal artistic skill!) to achieve such a professional-looking result.

Bake a chocolate beetroot cake

How pretty is this cake?

Blogger Joy the Baker has sidestepped unnatural dyes and the like and still managed to bring us a confection the colour of which is rarely seen outside of a sweet shop. Her secret? Beetroot.

Joy’s recipe for chocolate beetroot cake with cream cheese icing includes grated beetroot to keep the texture moist and the colour bright. The taste, Joy assures us, is sweet-but-not-too-sweet and absolutely, definitely, not like a salad!

It is worth bearing in mind that beetroot is messy though, so don some rubber gloves if you don’t want your hands to look like Miss Piggy for days afterwards.

Of course, you can leave the beetroot out of the icing if you want to keep it classy and cream-coloured, but we think that there’s nothing wrong with the occasional touch of kitsch, especially when it comes to cake!

Clear your clutter with magazine stash seats

We hate throwing out old magazines. For instant inspiration, nothing beats a quick flick through a few back issues. That said, we don’t want to be tripping over piles of paper every time we try to walk down the hallway.

German designers NJU Studio have come up with a solution to our problem in the form of these magazine stash seats. They let us display our collections proudly and neatly, where we can still have a quick read when we fancy. Very hoarder-chic, don’t you think?

Take your plants for a ride

Living in a small space is no excuse for not exercising those keen green fingers. These adorable bike planters are so super cute and are the perfect way to jazz up your ride whilst giving back some much needed CO2. The little plant pots from Etsy shop Wearable Planter not only come fit for your bike but can be worn as funky necklaces and brooches.

Colleen says "why keep your plants at home?" and we agree, why not!

Wash away the winter with citrus salt scrub

This year’s spring has been so long coming, it’s taken us a little by surprise. Now the sun is shining and there’s blossom on the trees, and our pasty arms and legs are nowhere near ready to be revealed to the world.

We’re hoping this citrus salt scrub DIY will save us from a spring spent sweating in leggings and long sleeves. Pop over to the Martha Writes blog to find how to mix up your own batch of exfoliator, which will banish dead skin and give it a zingy lemon boost. Alright sun, we’re ready for you.

Indulge in some brioche French toast

The blogosphere is jam-packed full of healthy, delicious, nutrient-filled breakfast ideas. So why can’t we get Sunday Suppers’ ridiculously indulgent recipe for brioche French toast out of our minds?

The ingredients list includes (deep breath) crème fraiche, mascarpone, marmalade, and six whole eggs. Enough to send anyone into an immediate food coma, which isn’t ideal if the clock has yet to even strike noon.

We’re saving this recipe up for a special occasion, or a lazy Sunday (whichever comes first), and planning a light lunch that day!

What's your greatest British day out?

The National Trust has announced My Great British Day Out, a new competition with a chance to win £2000 towards making their perfect day out happen. Entrants are being asked to pick their favourite location, from castles to woodland to the home of one of The Beatles (the National Trust don’t just do stately homes, you know!), then get imaginative and dream up their ideal, unique event.

Log on to the Facebook competition page to have a nosey through other peoples’ dream days out and get some inspiration for how you’d like to spend your summer. To give you a little taster, Sam would love a woodland mad-hatters tea party, Rory dreams of a sunrise fry-up on the beach, while Scooby (ahem) wants to spend a night hunting ghosts in a crumbly old castle.

Vote for your favourite idea, or if you think you have a better one, pop your own up – but get cracking, because the deadline is the end of May!

Craft a blackboard bottle marker

Chalkboard paint seems to be having a moment this season. In a world of laptops and kindles, the combination of white chalk and blackboard has an element of old-school cool. Our pick of the chalkboard projects is this upcycled wine bottle DIY from craft blog Mary Janes and Galoshes. We're not quite sure what we’d use these for (blogger Taylor suggests wedding table markers), all we know is that we adore the unexpected combination of shape and surface.

Light up your life with Mason jar lanterns

We like a bit of nifty upcycling, but we’re even bigger fans when the new product looks even better than the original. Etsy seller Boots and Gus is an impressive example of how to do upcycling the right way. Designers Jeff and Mark have filled their shop with wonderfully quirky chandeliers fashioned from vintage Mason jars.

If you’re not ready to commit to a full-blown light feature in your living room, Blogger Chez Beeper Bebe has gone for a more toned down approach and transformed her old jars into tea light lanterns for the garden.

Vintage Scrabble tile magnets - why haven’t we seen this before?! Like those garish plastic letters that have for so long adorned our fridges, except more laid back and much, much cooler.

We were so excited by this revelation, we had a hunt round the internet for more Scrabble-design fun and it turns out that those crafty folks at Etsy discovered the retro appeal of vintage scrabble tiles long ago.

Offerings range from jewellery to wedding favours to wine charms, but top of the crafters is Cool Boy Creations, who has knocked up a whole range of Scrabble tile coasters with quirky messages. Our pick of the slogans? The nerd set. Get your geek on!

50 things to do before you're 11 3/4

These days it feels like children are more likely to be found scaling buildings on their Playstation than climbing trees in their back garden. The National Trust has decided to fight the trend by launching 50 Things to do before you're 11¾, a nationwide campaign to get kids off the sofa and into the wild.

The initiative provides a checklist of activities to complete before you hit the grand old age of 11¾. Camp out in the wild, set up a snail race, hunt for bugs or light a fire without matches - there's a whole host of mini-adventures to be had.

Children can pick up a free scrapbook from participating National Trust properties or check off each activity on the 50 Things to do before you’re 11 ¾ website. Here they can also get advice from the Elite Rangers, an intrepid team of outdoors experts including Den-Boy and Captain Skim. Go to www.50things.org.uk to get started!

Vegetable of the month... rhubarb

Vegetable of the month? Rhubarb? Yep. We haven’t cheated, rhubarb is technically a vegetable.

We were going to blog about asparagus (also in season, also fabulous), but for some reason we kept finding ourselves swayed back towards those bright pink rhubarb stems.

There are plenty of options for this lovely veggie other than rhubarb and strawberry crumble (although that is a classic for a reason – that’s our favourite recipe we’ve linked up). To prove it we’ve lined up a whole day’s worth of rhubarb recipes.

Kicking off bright and early in the morning, we want toast but oh, we’re bored of marmite or marmalade. Fear not, the aptly named Lovely Morning has come to the rescue with her rhubarb jam recipe. Munch it on toast, pop it on some natural yoghurt or wrap a jar up as a gift for a friend, its as versatile as you like.

Next we have a casual garden lunch with friends, which we’ll conclude with a cheeky rhubarb crumb bar from White on Rice Couple. Stomachs were rumbling all round when this recipe popped up on our screens, is it having the same effect on you?

Finally, to round off our tiring rhubarb-filled day, we’ll be knocking up an ice-cold fresh rhubarb cocktail courtesy of Sugarlaws. Phew, we told you we could do it. And not a crumble in sight!

Bring the outdoors in with plant print cushions

Sallynoodle may be new to Etsy but she has definitely arrived with a bang! Her plant print cushions are printed with digitally manipulated photographs of trees and flowers for an effect that is chic, fresh and not at all cutesy.

When the rain is dripping from our drainpipes and running down our window panes, this is the perfect way to bring a touch of the great outdoors indoors.

String up some paper doily pom poms

As much as we love bunting, for a new party decoration idea we’re big fans of these paper doily pom poms.

At this summer's tea parties, we won't be hiding our doilies underneath the cakes, but stitching them together with neon thread and hanging them from our trees! We also adore the oversized tissue paper versions which will add a burst of colour.

We think that if we can understand it even without instructions, it’ll be plenty simple enough to tackle in the pre-party panic!
